3 Costly HVAC Repairs That Can Be Avoided

Routine HVAC maintenance is a must if you want to keep your unit in good condition. Some homeowners think maintenance is an unnecessary expense, but they often don’t take into account the costs of not maintaining their HVAC system. In the long run, cutting back on HVAC maintenance is likely to cost you more due to increased repair and replacement costs.

Through routine HVAC maintenance, homeowners can avoid these expensive HVAC repairs:

Finding and fixing refrigerant leaks. A common misconception is that refrigerant—a chemical used to transfer heat—is used up by your HVAC system in the same way that a car uses up gasoline. However, it isn’t depleted in the process; rather, the HVAC system converts it to gas form to reduce indoor temperatures, then converts it back to liquid form once the cooling process restarts. As such, the only way your HVAC system can lose refrigerant is through leaks. If your HVAC system doesn’t have enough refrigerant, it may have trouble heating or cooling your home. Other signs your HVAC system is losing refrigerant include frozen coils and higher electricity costs.

Fixing a refrigerant leak isn’t too hard or expensive, right? While it is a relatively straightforward task, finding the source of the leak may take a while. Not to mention, a contractor from a residential HVAC services company will have to replenish your HVAC unit’s refrigerant supply.

Replacing a broken compressor. The compressor is the HVAC component that circulates refrigerant throughout the HVAC system, in the process removing heat and humidity. However, the compressor might not be able to do its work efficiently if dirty coils prevent heat from being expelled. This could force the compressor to work harder and cause it to overheat over time. In most cases, HVAC installation contractors will need to install a new compressor, which happens to be one of the most expensive HVAC components.

Repairing a broken condenser. Your HVAC unit’s outdoor condenser–which as the name suggests releases heat outside through condensation–could break down if it’s damaged by debris or if there’s a refrigerant leak. However, since the condenser is made of multiple components, diagnosing the issue may take quite a while.
