The Most Common Causes of Water Discoloration

Water discoloration is a serious problem that many homeowners have to deal with. However, the proper solution to this issue can vary depending on what’s causing the problem. Here our local plumbing services experts talk about the common causes of water discoloration and what can be done to address the issue.

Rust

If the discoloration is a reddish hue, there’s a good chance that the problem is caused by rust. As water flows through the pipes, it picks up rust particles, giving it the familiar reddish color. Getting rid of the rust is a straightforward process that usually involves replacing the older pipes leading up to the faucet.

Algae

Algae tends to grow in areas with high moisture content. However, it’s rare for algae to get inside your plumbing unless there’s a gap or seam somewhere. Plumbing service specialists say that algae buildup is commonly found near the faucet or shower head, where moisture tends to linger while also being exposed to the air. Minor algae buildup can be scrubbed off, but severe buildup may require pipe or faucet replacement.

Dirty Water

If the water coming out of your tap is brown or grey in color, this is a sign that soil or other types of sediment are trapped in your pipes. Newly-installed plumbing will also have this kind of discoloration, but it normally goes away after enough water has flowed through the pipes. If the discoloration remains, this could mean that there’s a gap somewhere in the plumbing that’s drawing in soil or ground waste. Of course this will have to be fixed ASAP.

Always Call an Expert

Troubleshooting water discoloration requires the right tools and skills if you want more effective repairs. Furthermore, having a certified expert perform plumbing services will greatly reduce the risk of problems getting worse. This is because DIY repairs attempted by inexperienced amateurs can lead to actual pipe damage, which is more difficult to repair.
