When Do You Need a Water Softener?

Water softening systems can help prolong the life of your plumbing and prevent damage to your clothes. They work by removing excess calcium and magnesium ions using an exchange with sodium or potassium ions. After this exchange, the water softener will regenerate and flush out excess ions until it’s completely recharged with new sodium ions.

Here are some signs you need a water softener from a trusted plumbing services provider.

Dry Skin & Air

Hard water contains an excess of calcium and magnesium salts, which can make the skin dry and itchy. This is due to the fact that the minerals in the water stay on your skin, and because soap has a hard time dissolving in hard water it can’t get rid of them, leaving a residue on your skin that can cause irritation and dryness. Hard water also blocks pores and makes blackheads more inflamed.

Scale Buildup on Your Appliances

Scale or limescale is a hard, chalky substance composed of calcium and magnesium bicarbonate. The presence of these mineral deposits within your pipes is a sure indication that you have hard water. Limescale can severely clog up your plumbing, making your system less efficient by making it harder for water to get through the pipes. Moreover, scale buildup can cause defects in your plumbing, so if you notice its presence on your appliances, it’s best to contact your trusted provider of plumbing services

Gray, Faded Clothes

If your clothes and bedsheets have a gray tint and look faded, this is another sign you have hard water. The fabric may also feel scratchy, and can be difficult to wash due to the surplus of minerals in the water. You can reduce grayness from hard water by getting a front loading washing machine and using liquid detergent. However, the best solution to this problem is to get a quality water softener.
