Understanding the Efficiency Rating of Furnaces and Boilers

You can thank furnaces and boilers for keeping your home toasty and comfortable during the winter season. Both of these heating devices have a significant impact on the temperature settings in a building, and they all affect efficiency.

A-1 Comfort Care Heating, Cooling and Plumbing, the leading provider of air conditioning repair services, discusses both their efficiency ratings and why you should look out for them.

High-Efficiency Heating Systems

Highly efficient boilers and furnaces have features in common, such as sealed combustion and gas condensation. The latter part is necessary because condensing flue gases in another heat exchanger boosts its efficiency.

You should also check its  annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE), which is established by the Federal Trade Commission for homeowners to compare heating efficiencies of different heating components. High-efficient heating systems have 90% to 98.5% AFUE.

Mid-Efficiency Heating System

For heating components in the mid-range efficiency category, they contain an electronic ignition and a small diameter flue pipe. They also have exhaust fans to control the flow of combustion air and gases. The mid-level efficiency boilers and furnaces have 80% to 83% AFUE ratings.

You’ll also need the assistance and regular inspection of HVAC installation contractors to keep mid-level heating systems in check.

Old and Low-Efficiency Heating System

The features of a low-efficient heating system include a continuous pilot light and heavy heat exchanger. It also allows has a natural draft that creates a flow of combustions gases. These heating systems have a low AFUE of 56% to 70%.
