Thermostat Not Reaching Set Temperature: Causes and Fixes

Using the thermostat is straightforward — with a few presses of the button, your air conditioner or furnace will blow cool or warm air until you reach your desired comfort needs. But what if it doesn’t do its intended function? It sure is frustrating to deal with it, but it pays to know what’s causing it to happen, and what you can do about it. A-1 Comfort Care Heating, Cooling & Plumbing takes a look at the possible reasons why your thermostat isn’t reaching the set temperature.

1. Size of Thermostat

Your thermostat’s size is likely to blame for this issue. It may not reach the desired temperature if it’s too small for your living spaces. When getting a new thermostat for your home, be sure to seek a qualified HVAC contractor to help find the best one.

2. Frozen Thermostat

If you have a smart thermostat, one of the things that can cause its touch screen to malfunction is the static electricity around you. The screen may freeze as a result, preventing the device from sending and showing data updates. When this happens, try restarting your thermostat. Turn it off, wait for at least five seconds, and turn it back on again to check if it works again.

3. Thermostat Batteries Running on Empty

Some thermostats run on batteries. If yours is not showing the right information on the screen display or not responding even after a few taps, it could mean its batteries have run out. Replacing the batteries promptly should get your thermostat running again and performing its best.

4. Wrong Thermostat Placement

Your thermostat isn’t reaching the set temperature because it was installed in a less-than-ideal location in your home. If it is placed close to an appliance that gives off heat, your AC may run constantly in the summer and your heater won’t turn on to provide heat. Be sure your new thermostat is installed in a central location in your home to minimize any misreadings.
