Plumbing Noises and the Possible Meanings Behind Them

The odd sounds you hear from the toilet or water pipes may not be a figment of your imagination. Listen carefully when you hear these noises, because they may indicate that your plumbing system is demanding some attention.

A-1 Comfort Care, a trusted provider of HVAC and plumbing services since 1999, lists some of the most common plumbing noises and discusses what they usually mean.

Vibrating Sounds When Flushing the Toilet

If you hear a vibrating sound every time you flush the toilet, it’s likely due to a fill valve that’s lost its elasticity and become hard. You can confirm this by gently lifting the fill valve float arm. If the noise stops when you do this, it means your toilet’s fill valve is due for replacement.

Banging Noises When Faucet Is Turned On and Off

One possible reason for a banging noise is what’s called water hammer. This issue typically occurs when there’s high water pressure, and the water moving in one direction doesn’t stop flowing even when you shut your faucet off. That’s why there’s still some force causing the pipe to flex. If the pipe is located near a wooden surface, it will likely bang against the wood. Give your plumbing service provider a call and ask if you can have a water hammer arrestor installed to stop this kind of noise.

Rumbling Sounds From a Water Heater

A rumbling noise from your water heater is usually a sign of sediment build-up at the bottom of it. This sound is produced when water is trapped in the sediment while it’s boiling — which means your water heater isn’t functioning efficiently. The water at the bottom of your water heater tank can be drained, but since it’s extremely hot, it would be best to hire a professional to take care of this for you.
