Crucial Placement Considerations for a Ductless AC Unit

Ductless air conditioning systems have become a favorite among New Jersey homeowners because of their many unique advantages. A ductless AC works just like a central air conditioning system, except it doesn’t require ductwork to distribute conditioned air throughout your home. It has both an indoor and outdoor unit that should be placed strategically to ensure reliable cooling performance.

But where exactly should you position a ductless AC system? A-1 Comfort Care Heating, Cooling & Plumbing, the leading air conditioning expert in the area, shares the essentials.

1. Install your ductless AC unit in basements and room additions. There may be some areas in your home that can’t receive consistent cooling because they lack the necessary ductwork. These often include basements and room additions. Placing a ductless AC unit in these areas allows you to stay comfortable without the need to make costly alterations to your home’s main HVAC system.

2. Place the air handler of your ductless AC unit somewhere accessible. This way, you’re able to reach it easily when it’s time to clean or replace the filters. Positioning the air handler at an accessible location also makes it easier for your HVAC contractor to get any AC repair and maintenance services done.

3. Install the air handler at a central location. This ensures that all areas of a given room receive even cooling. In a room with a standard ceiling height, position the unit within two feet of the ceiling, but if the room has high ceilings, place the unit eight feet from the floor.

4. Make sure the outdoor unit has space around it. The outdoor unit is generally placed on a home’s exterior wall. But if it’s wall-mounted, there should be a gap of at least five inches between the outdoor unit and the wall, and at least two inches of space above it. To facilitate free air movement, clear the space around the outdoor unit of any plants and foliage.
