While improved construction techniques and material technology have produced more energy-efficient residential and commercial structures, the downside is that allergens get trapped and recirculated within those structures. Dust, pet dander and pollens are just a few of the indoor allergens that can lead to allergies and asthma. A-1 Comfort Care, your local plumbing services expert, discusses these common pollutants.
Poor indoor air quality is one of the top five environmental risks to public health, and has been linked to the rise of asthma and allergies in children. Here are some of the common air pollutants that reduce indoor air quality.
Carbon Monoxide
Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that can be produced by appliances and heaters that burn natural gas, oil, wood, propane or kerosene. Though carbon monoxide is a major component of car exhaust, too, much of it can also be a problematic air pollutant.
Tobacco Smoke
While many people see no harm in allowing employees a cigarette break to have a smoke or two if they so choose, there is problem: that smoke is affecting more than just themselves. Tobacco smoke also affects air quality. In fact, environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) consists of more than 3,800 different chemical compounds which can adversely affect smokers and non-smokers alike.
Radon
Radon is an odorless and colorless radioactive gas. It results from the natural breakdown of uranium in rock and soil. It can seep into homes through cracks in the foundation, floors and walls, and is also found in water.
Molds
Molds grow where there’s moisture. It can usually be found in damp basements, refrigerators, air conditioners, humidifiers and mattresses. It can also grow in carpeting, under ceiling panels, or behind walls (with chronic water leaks). At A-1 Comfort Care, we can check for mold growth as part of our plumbing service.
Solvents and Pesticides
Solvents are present in household cleaners, degreasers, arts and craft supplies and glues. They can also be found in “off-gassing” from new carpeting, flooring, particle board and furniture. Residues of some pesticides mutate after application and may concentrate at floor level.
