4 Common Boiler Problems & Why They Occur

A boiler failure is the last thing you want to deal with in the middle of winter. Take a look at some of the most common boiler problems shared in this post to better understand what’s causing them. If your boiler is experiencing any of these issues, you might need to call on a heating and plumbing service provider to address them.

Kettling. Kettling refers to the noise that malfunctioning boilers or pipes make. It’s similar to the sound a kettle makes when it comes to a boil. This occurs when the heat exchanger develops buildup from continuous water usage. While it is a normal occurrence, it can obstruct the flow of water, resulting in extreme heating, thus the noise.

The pilot light goes out. When the pilot light of your boiler goes out, this typically indicates that the thermocouple is faulty. Fixing this can be as simple as reigniting the flame. Before you do it, however, make sure that your boiler is receiving gas. If there’s no gas reaching the equipment, it could mean that the gas in your entire house is turned off or the gas stopcock isn’t on. To resolve this issue, consult your local plumbing services provider.

Frozen condensate pipe. Many modern boilers use a condensate pipe for the removal of waste gas. When the temperatures are extremely low outside, the chances of the condensate pipe freezing are high. When the water freezes, it will cause a blockage in the unit. If you’re dealing with a frozen pipe, thaw the pipe by applying hot water to it using a cloth or other warming method.

Defective radiator. If the radiator of your boiler fails to heat up, you won’t get much heating. This can be caused by the radiator being off-balance or there being a buildup of grime or sludge in the transfer section from the boiler to the radiator.
