A puddle on your laundry room floor is not only a hassle to clean up, it’s also a sign of a bigger problem — a washing machine leak.
Many leaks have universal causes, but there are also issues specific to front- and top-load washers. In this article, A-1 Comfort Care Heating, Cooling & Plumbing, one of the top providers of local plumbing services, lists a few simple ways you can troubleshoot your washing machine.
Top-Load Washers
A top-load washer can leak from the front, back or underside of the machine. For new washers, leaks from the back usually happen because the person installing it forgot to remove the manufacturer’s drain plug prior to putting on the drain hose. In this case, you’ll need to remove the hose and take out the plug. Watch out for excess water when you do so, and make sure to keep towels and a bucket handy.
Another possible reason for leaks from the back of a top-load washer are loose fill hoses. To check if these are the cause of the leak, turn off the water supply, then remove the hoses. Inspect the rubber washers and ensure they’re in good condition. If all else fails, call a professional plumbing service.
Front-Load Washers
Leaks from the front of front-load washers may occur if the gasket is dirty or the seal has punctures. Make sure to clean the gasket at least once a week and check the seals for trapped items. Leaks from the back, on the other hand, may be caused by too many suds. To prevent his, opt for HE (high efficiency) detergent and use only a small amount.
